Merge bank statements from several banks into one table
Add PDFs, scans, CSVs and bank files from different accounts and see one timeline, with overlaps and your own transfers handled and every statement still individually checked.
The merge problem
Combining statements is rarely just concatenation. Each bank prints dates its own way, uses its own sign convention (debit and credit columns, one signed column, trailing minus, CR/DR suffixes), and each period overlaps the next by a few days. Paste them into one spreadsheet and you get duplicates, double-counted transfers and totals nobody can explain.
What Tallyscope does when you add many files
- Reads each file on its own terms. Every file is parsed and checked as an individual statement, with its own opening, closing and status. A statement that does not add up is flagged without contaminating the others.
- Detects overlapping rows. Statements that cover the same dates can contain the same transactions twice. Duplicates from overlap are detected and excluded from totals.
- Handles transfers between your own accounts. A payment from your current account to your savings account appears as money out in one statement and money in in another. Counting both inflates both income and spending, so such transfers are detected and excluded from totals. A toggle lets you include them.
- Flags possible repeats, without deleting them. Two identical rows in the same statement (same date, amount and description) may be real, such as two coffees, or a printing artefact. When the printed balances cannot decide, they are listed on the Review tab and stay counted until you choose "Both are real" or "Count only one".
- Keeps the trail. The table and the exports show which statement and account every row came from and whether it counts in totals.
Working with the merged table
The table is virtualised and can hold tens of thousands of rows. Search and filter by text, date or amount, sort, open any row for details, edit a category, swap a direction or leave a row out of totals. The totals show money in, money out and net, per statement and combined, and the latest balance for each. If the statements are in different currencies, choose one reporting currency and view everything converted; see multi-currency statements.
Mixed formats
You can combine any supported inputs in one session: text and scanned PDFs, photos, CSV and spreadsheets, and the bank formats OFX, MT940 and camt.053. Light files such as CSV and OFX are processed first so a heavy scan cannot hold up the rest of a batch.
Limits to know about
The number of files you can load at once depends on the plan: 10 on Free, 25 on the Day pass, 50 on Pro. There is no page limit. Merging does not change what a verification status means, so a combined table can contain Verified and Needs review statements side by side; read the statuses before you rely on the combined total. If you need to hand the result to someone, the Excel export has a Statements sheet that lists each source with its status.
Export
CSV is free for the first 25 rows; Excel, PDF, JSON and unlimited CSV are included in the Day pass and Pro plans. See pricing.
All of this happens in your browser; see converting without uploading. Open Tallyscope and add your first two statements.
Frequently asked questions
How are duplicates found?
Rows that appear in overlapping statements are detected and excluded from totals. Identical rows inside one statement are only flagged for you to decide.
Why are some transfers excluded from totals?
A transfer between your own accounts is both money in and money out. Counting it inflates both, so it is excluded by default; you can toggle that.
Is there a limit on how many statements I can merge?
The number of files loaded at once is 10 on Free, 25 on the Day pass, and 50 on Pro.
